No One Is Left Behind - Rwanda Women’s Network Leading on Delivering UN Gender Equality Goals (SDG5)

Under the theme of ‘No One Is Left Behind’, Rwanda Women’s Network led the Rwanda Civil Society Organization Forum to debrief on the latest UN Sustainable Development Goals and their implementation in Rwanda. The forum is a collective of 30 Civil Society Organizations (CSO) working on diverse human rights and development goals in the country. It provides a platform for CSOs to enhance their engagement with government, various private sector partners and grassroots communities.

Leaving No One Behind requires an understanding of the process, maximizing education and involving the youth in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It’s our collective efforts that will bring us closer in the implementation of SDGs and holding the government accountable to these commitments
— Mary Balikungeri, Rwanda Women’s Network Founder & Director

One of the focus areas of the forum was how collectively, Rwanda is working towards ending gender inequality and poverty in the country. “Empowering women to join the workforce is key to promoting equality and as a poverty reduction mechanism. Inclusivity is important to everyone who works, the convention sends a powerful message by making the invisible – visible”. Said Mr. Faustin Mwambari, acting Director-General, Labor and Employment at the Ministry of Public Service and Labor.

Leading the Civil Society Organizations forum is an example of how Rwanda Women’s Network is advocating for change aligned with UN Sustainable Development goals (mainly SDG5 (Gender equality) and SDG8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Another example is how we partner with Hivos’s Women@Work Campaign in implementing the Women Leadership Project in the Horticulture sector in Rwanda. The Campaign aims to promote the advancement of women's leadership and representation in decision-making processes in the sector by addressing both strategic and practical issues that hinder women’s progress.

Empowering People and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality

The Sustainable Development Agenda, adopted by UN Member States in 2015, set a 2030 deadline for the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.

At Rwanda Women’s Network, we are committed to deliver on these goals and ending gender inequality in the country. As part of this work we are leading in advocacy and influencing in government, social justice and private sector forums.

Help us invest in women and girls now
